Quick Key is a program (division office has covered the cost for all users) that allows teachers to mark multiple choice (and soon to include numerical response as well!) assessments instantly with their cell phone. Student scoresheets are printed on regular paper and assessment results can be automatically uploaded to your Gradebook in Power School. Item analysis allows teachers to review the validity of the assessment (much like diploma exam analysis) and student grades can be combined between classes or teachers to assess the understanding of an entire grade or school, as well as a single class.
Requires a laptop or cellphone with QuickKey & Powerteacher/Gradebook Installed.
Teaching Tough Kids - Classroom managment is tricky business at the best of times. Throw in a tough kid (or 2 or 3) and it can feel like your classroom is running you! The session will include a discussion of what makes a tough kid tough, why (and how) to avoid power struggles, good classroom rules and how to make them and specific strategies that you can use in your classroom right away!

You use them!! The devices in the pockets of our students pack more processing power than the desktop computers of fifteen years ago. The neuroplasticity of the 21st Century Learner is different than that of any previous generation; teachers and students alike are well-served when we approach instruction and assessment with this in mind. This session will explore some valuable apps that grades 7-12 teachers can use to begin to leverage the power of these devices.
Participants will need a smartphone, tablet or iPod for this session. Necessary apps will be communicated to participants in the Fall.

At the Math Minds initiative we have identified principles for successful mathematics teaching to support all students. These principles are based on 5 years of research in the classroom and include insights from neuroscience (cognitive load). In this session we will elaborate on one of these principles, “Ribboning,” which informs teaching decisions moment by moment in mathematics lessons.

Each person will receive a part of a whole recipe as they enter into the Kitchen. They will have to talk with the other people in the class to create a cookie recipe to produce. There are 4 different recipes that have similarities but some real difference as well. They will have to produce their cookies and see if they were able to get the recipes right. Great for team building and communication between class members.
